About Department

Overview

Physics is the foundation of natural sciences it also has a practical effect on our daily lives. It is a natural science based on experiments, measurements, and mathematical analysis with the purpose of finding quantitative physical laws for everything from the Nanoworld of the microcosms to the planets, solar systems, and galaxies that occupy the macrocosms.
At The Physics Department at SCU, We will teach you the laws of nature used to predict the world's behavior and all kinds of machinery. Many of the everyday technological inventions that we now take for granted resulted from discoveries in physics. The basic laws in physics are universal, but physics in our time is such a wide field that its subfields are almost considered separate sciences.

Master physics nuclear radiation

Master physics solid state

Vision
The department looks forward to providing advanced study that is equivalent to international standards in order to graduate distinguished cadres that contribute to scientific research and interact with environmental and community problems.

Mission
The department aims to teach and develop some programs in physics and applies them in a way to encourages scientific excellence and innovation.

Undergraduates

Faculty of Science Suez Canal University grants the student a Bachelor's degree in Physics major.

Education system:

  • The faculty is following the credit hours system.
  • The education period, as to earn a Bachelor's degree from the faculty of Science is 4 academic years, according to the internal statute of universities regulation law. Each academic year is divided into 2 semesters.
  • For students whose education period, extends to more than 4 academic years, they may graduate in any of the semesters (1st or 2nd or summer semester) only in one case, which is to pass all graduation requirements (146 credit hours).
  • Each semester consists of 17 weeks divided as follows:
  1. The registration period (1 week)
  2. Education period (14 weeks)
  3. Exams period (2 weeks)
  • Faculty’s council may open registration for the “summer semester”, for failed students or ones with “Poor” degrees. The semester’s period is 9 weeks. Maximum hours to be registered to are (9 credit hours). The semester is divided as follows:
  1. The registration period (3 days)
  2. Education period (7 weeks)
  3. Exams period (1 week)
  • As to earn Bachelor's degree, the student must pass successfully (146 credit hours).
  • University’s requirements are (8 credit hours), divided equally in both semesters. Includes the following courses:
  1. Language (2 credit hours)
  2. Computer ( 2 credit hours)
  3. Human rights (2 credit hours)
  4. Elective course (1 credit hour)
  • Faculty’s requirements are (30 credit hours) including:
  1. 18 credit hours (obligatory), divided equally into (Chemistry- Physics- Mathematics) courses, for both semesters (9 hours+ 9 hours)
  2. 12 credit hours (elective), chosen from faculty’s other majors which serve students’ majors (Geology- Zoology- Botany- Applied Geo physics- Marine biology- Marine sciences- Microbiology). They’re divided equally on both semesters (6 hours+ 6 hours)
  • Majors’ requirements: 108 credit hours, divided as follows, on 3rd’, 4th, and 5th levels:
  1. 72 credit hours (obligatory)
  2. 36 credit hours (elective)
  • With Honor degree: This degree is granted to the student who obtained a GPA of 3.5 or more through all academic years without failure in any course during his\her education period in the faculty (or in the faculty, he/she transferred from).

Summer training:

Summer training is considered one of the major requirements. All Students undergo summer applied training for 6 weeks. Students may spend his\her training period in one of the companies, factories, or authorities related to the field of specialization. If the student didn’t find an external training location, she passes the training period inside the faculty, without calculating the credit hours. An Academic advisor chooses the appropriate time for the student, to start his\her training, in coordination with the department in charge, during the summer vacation.

Postgraduates

The faculty offers its graduates different degrees to acquire:
-  Diploma degree
-  Master’s degree
-  PhD degree

Terms of applying:
-  Student applies a request to faculty’s Dean, who shifts him\her to department’s council in charge, as to state research’s topic and program, Finally all documents will be presented to faculty’s council for needed action.
-  Research topic is stated before applying at least with two years. Committee is in charge to edit research’s title.
-  Faculty’s council is in charge with stopping student’s registration for a period of time, in case of applying an accepted excuse, deprives him\her from education or research completion. This period will not be included with period mentioned in (16) (17) terms.
-  Student’s registration is stopped in case:
Supervisor’s report about the student is unsatisfying.
Estimated period is ended and student did not apply the research yet.
If the committee refuses discussing research paper twice.
-  Student applies 10 copies of research paper, after being accepted, as to be distributed among committee’s members and faculty’s library.
-  The committee is in charge to exchange research paper with other universities.

Projects

The department participates in many projects such as research projects besides the students projects in order to develop some programs. In addition to that the students participated in 2 projects: First one was developing a 3D interactive imaging system of the hepatic blood vessels. The second one was about low-radiation CT scans.
